The Guicho is a small Galician warren hound used mainly to hunt rabbit in the mountains, recovering after coming close to extinction before its recognition in 2001.

## Overview

The Guicho is one of four traditional dog breeds of Galicia in north-western Spain, alongside the Can de Palleiro, Perdigueiro Galego and Podengo Galego. It is a small, light hunting dog.

It is mainly found in the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra and is used chiefly for rabbit hunting.

## History

The Guicho was close to extinction before it was recognised by the Xunta de Galicia in April 2001 and nationally by royal decree a month later, when a stud-book was also started. It is kept by a breed society.

Its conservation status improved afterwards, and in 2025 the Real Sociedad Canina de España listed it among breeds in recovery. A 2024 census in parts of Pontevedra found 309 dogs.

## Appearance

A small, slender dog. Females are about 30 to 38 cm tall and 6 to 8 kg; males about 34 to 42 cm and 8 to 10 kg. The coat may be solid from sand to chocolate or liver, or bi-coloured, tri-coloured or sable.

## Temperament

A keen, energetic little hunter, bred for working rough ground in pursuit of rabbits. It is typically alert and busy.

## Care and exercise

Needs regular exercise and chances to follow its nose, and a secure garden is wise given its hunting instincts. Grooming is minimal.
