A sturdy, brown German hunting spaniel bred for foresters and professional hunters, valued for its nose, courage and willingness to flush, track and retrieve.

## Overview

The German Spaniel, or Deutscher Wachtelhund, is a medium-sized, strongly built gundog with a wavy brown coat. It is a versatile hunter used for flushing, tracking and retrieving.

It is rarely kept as a pet and belongs with active hunters and working owners, mostly in Germany and surrounding countries.

## History

The modern breed was shaped around 1890 by Frederick Roberth, using the old German Stöberer, which was mentioned in writing as far back as 1719 and prized for its strong nose. After 1848, ordinary people could hunt and needed a versatile dog.

Stöberer stock found in Bavaria was crossed with water dogs and sporting spaniels. The breed was recognised in 1903, and today's dogs descend from eleven animals chosen in 1910. The United Kennel Club recognised it in 1996.

## Appearance

A strong-boned, muscular, medium-sized dog with long, thick wavy hair and fairly long ears reaching to or near the tip of the nose. Dogs stand about 48 to 54 cm and bitches 45 to 52 cm.

The coat is short and fine on the head but longer, thick and wavy or curly on the body, with feathering and good undercoat.

## Temperament

Passionate and determined in the field, with a strong nose and plenty of stamina. It is loyal and works closely with its handler.

It is bred to hunt, so it tends to be intense and needs a firm, experienced owner and plenty of purposeful activity.

## Care and exercise

This dog needs a lot of daily exercise and real work, such as tracking or hunting. It is not suited to a sedentary home.

Brush the coat several times a week to prevent tangles and check the ears and coat after outings in thick cover.

## Health

Generally a hardy working breed. Ear care is important, and hip dysplasia and some inherited eye problems can occur.
