The French Bulldog is a small, muscular companion with bat ears and a flat face, developed in nineteenth-century Paris. It is a charming, adaptable city dog, but its flat face brings real health challenges.

## Overview

The French Bulldog, or Frenchie, is a compact, muscular companion with upright bat ears and a short, flat face. It is cheerful, affectionate and well suited to apartment life.

It has become one of the most registered breeds in the world, topping American Kennel Club rankings in 2023 and 2024.

## History

The breed appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century from small Bulldogs brought over by English lace workers, crossed with local ratters. By 1860 few toy Bulldogs remained in England because so many had been sent to France.

Fashionable society ladies, artists and writers adored them. Americans imported the breed in the 1880s and favoured the upright bat ear. The Kennel Club in Britain recognised it separately in 1905.

## Appearance

Frenchies are small, muscular and sturdy, with a large square head, wrinkled skin and upright bat ears. The coat is short, fine and soft. The AKC standard calls for a maximum weight of about 13 kg.

Accepted colours include brindle, fawn, cream and pied, which is white with brindle patches.

## Temperament

French Bulldogs are affectionate, clownish and people-focused, and they usually get along well with family, children and other pets. They are alert without being big barkers.

They can be stubborn, so training should be patient, short and reward-based. They dislike long periods alone.

## Care and exercise

Frenchies need only gentle daily walks and play, and should avoid heat and hard exercise because they overheat easily. Wipe the facial folds regularly, keep the ears clean and brush the short coat weekly.

Many cannot swim well, so be careful near water. Keep them at a lean weight to ease breathing.

## Health

The flat face causes brachycephalic airway syndrome, with noisy breathing, heat intolerance and anaesthesia risks. Skin fold infections, ear and eye problems, spinal disorders and allergies are common. Most litters need Caesarean births. Studies suggest a life expectancy of around 10 years. Choose breeders who prioritise open nostrils and health testing.
