A critically endangered medium-sized Basque scenthound whose name means hare dog, with a short pale orange-brown coat and white markings. Now used mainly on wild boar.

## Overview

The Erbi Txakur is a Spanish scenthound from the provinces of Álava and Bizkaia in the Basque Country. Its name means hare dog, as it was the traditional dog of Basque hare hunters.

It is one of the country's native breeds and is critically endangered, with fewer than fifty animals counted in 2009.

## History

The Erbi Txakur is the traditional hare-hunting dog of Basque hunters. It is one of five Basque dog breeds and, with most of the others, was officially recognised as a traditional Basque breed by government decree in 2001.

It was included in the Basque rural development plan for 2007 to 2013. As hares became scarce, it came to be used mainly on wild boar, and sometimes roe deer or fox.

## Appearance

A medium-sized hound, smaller than the Spanish Hound (Sabueso Español) but more muscular, with shorter ears. The coat is short and an even pale orange-brown, with irregular white markings usually on the face, chest, paws and tail tip.

The nose and palate are pigmented and the eyes are chestnut-brown.

## Temperament

Bred to follow game for long hours, it is a determined, hardy working hound. It is best known as a hunter's dog rather than a house pet.

## Care and exercise

A working scenthound needs a lot of exercise and a purposeful outlet for its nose. It does best with experienced owners in rural surroundings. The short coat needs little grooming.
