The Dutch Smoushond is a small, shaggy yellow Dutch stable dog, once kept to catch rats and mice. It is rare, scruffy-faced and endearing, and almost vanished during the Second World War.

## Overview

The Dutch Smoushond is a small, rough-coated Dutch dog from the pinscher and schnauzer family, traditionally kept in stables to keep rats and mice under control.

Today it is rare and little known outside the Netherlands, where it is valued as a cheerful companion with a distinctive shaggy face.

## History

Stable dogs of this type were common in the Netherlands, and a club was formed in 1905 to register them as a proper breed because they were in danger of dying out. Its ancestors may be linked to early schnauzers, in a yellow colour that was not wanted in that breed.

The Second World War nearly ended the breed. From 1973 breeders rebuilt it from the few remaining dogs, many of them crossbred, and used Border Terriers in the work. The FCI accepted the rebuilt breed in 1981.

## Appearance

A small dog of up to about 10 kg and 43 cm at the withers. The head is broad and short, with drop ears set high, and the face has the shaggy, bearded look that gave the breed its name.

The weatherproof coat is rough and untidy, and always some shade of yellow.

## Temperament

The Dutch Smoushond is lively, alert and affectionate, with the busy nature of a working ratter. It is usually devoted to its family and enjoys being part of daily life.

## Care and exercise

It needs daily walks and play, and enjoys games and having a task. The rough coat should be brushed regularly and tidied occasionally by hand-stripping or trimming.

Early socialisation and consistent training help channel its terrier-like energy and prey drive.
