The Córdoba fighting dog was an extinct Argentine fighting dog, bred from mastiff types for dog fighting. It vanished after fighting was outlawed, but it is the foundation of the Dogo Argentino.

## Overview

The Córdoba fighting dog was a large, white, powerful dog from the province of Córdoba in Argentina. It was created by crossing old mastiff types, bulldogs and bull terriers, and it was bred only for dog fighting.

It no longer exists. Its legacy lives on in the Dogo Argentino, a modern breed built on its blood.

## History

The Córdoba fighting dog was developed in Córdoba, Argentina, from Spanish Mastiffs, Bull Terriers and early Bulldogs brought to South America. It was used for dog fighting until the early 20th century.

In the 1920s, Antonio Nores Martinez and his brother Agustin crossed it with several recognised breeds, including the Boxer, Great Dane and Pointer, to create the Dogo Argentino. When Argentina banned animal fights in 1954, the already scarce Córdoba dog died out.

## Appearance

Records describe it as a large, white, powerful dog of mastiff type. Little detailed information on its exact measurements survives, as it was never bred to a written standard.

## Temperament

It was known for extreme aggression, a willingness to fight to the death and a very high tolerance for pain. The aggression was so intense that fights could break out even during mating. It was not suited to family life.
