The Chukotka sled dog is the ancient working spitz of the Chukchi people, bred purely for efficient long-distance pulling. It is the forerunner of the Siberian Husky and still a true Arctic worker.

## Overview

The Chukotka sled dog is a hardy northern spitz developed by the Chukchi people of far northeastern Russia. For centuries it hauled loads and helped hunters travel over sea ice and tundra.

It is known for stamina, strength and a cooperative nature that suits life in a team. It is a rare dog outside its homeland and best suited to experienced owners who can offer cold weather, space and work.

## History

The Chukchi people shaped these dogs to hunt sea mammals on pack ice and to move people and catches across the windswept tundra of the Chukchi Peninsula. Evidence suggests sled transport was central to coastal life well before 500 AD.

Between the 1890s and 1930s many were exported to Alaska, where they became known as Siberian huskies and formed the base of that breed. In the Soviet era, mechanised travel and changing hunting rules caused the old dog population to collapse. Interest revived after the 1990s, and the Russian Kynologic Federation approved a standard in 1999.

## Appearance

This is a medium-sized, athletic spitz, standing roughly 53 to 65 cm at the withers. It is built for endurance rather than bulk, with a lean, strong frame and a well-furred tail.

The double coat is dense and insulating, and it comes in a wide variety of colours.

## Temperament

Chukotka sled dogs are friendly and willing, as a team dog must be. They are strong, hard-working and quick to learn, and they enjoy company, both canine and human.

They are not couch dogs. They need a job, plenty of movement and a pack-oriented lifestyle.

## Care and exercise

These dogs need a great deal of daily exercise, ideally pulling, running or hiking in cool weather. A secure fence is important, as they are keen travellers.

Grooming is simple most of the year, with weekly brushing, but heavy seasonal shedding needs extra attention. They do poorly in hot climates and should be kept cool and shaded.

## Health

The breed is generally regarded as tough and robust thanks to its working heritage. Keep weight lean, protect from overheating, and buy from breeders who health-check their stock.
