It hunts, points and retrieves in field, forest and water.\n\nMales are noticeably larger than females, and the breed is part of the wirehaired griffon family. Away from the hunt it is a loyal, adaptable companion for active people.","history":"Written standards for the breed date to the nineteenth century, yet the Fousek came close to disappearing in the 1920s. Dedicated Czech breeders rescued it by crossing in German Shorthaired and German Wirehaired Pointers.\n\nThe FCI recognised it in 1964, though German clubs argued it was almost identical to the Stichelhaar. In North America, later crosses to Wirehaired Pointing Griffons split breed clubs. The Fousek also helped found the Slovak Rough-haired Pointer.","appearance":"A medium-to-large, athletic dog with a muscular, wiry build. Its most striking features are the bushy eyebrows, moustache and beard on a harsh coat. The velvety ears hang close to the head, and the deep-set almond eyes are amber or brown.\n\nMales stand about 60 to 66 cm and females 58 to 62 cm.","personality":"Loyal, willing and adaptable, the Fousek bonds closely with its people and works well alongside them. It is intelligent and trainable, with a strong hunting drive and plenty of stamina.\n\nIt does best with a job to do and an active household, and makes a good companion for hunters and families alike.","care":"This is a working gundog that needs substantial daily exercise, ideally including scenting, retrieving and swimming. Mental work matters as much as running.\n\nThe harsh coat needs regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping, and the beard should be kept clean. Early socialisation and consistent, positive training bring out its best.","health":"Generally a sturdy, hardy breed. As with many medium-to-large gundogs, hip dysplasia and ear infections can occur, so hip screening and regular ear checks are sensible."},"recognition":{"fci_number":245,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/245.html","akc_url":null},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%8Cesk%C3%BD_Fousek","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q37666","wikipedia_revision":1368177989},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
