The Cantabrian Water Dog is an all-white water dog from the coast of Cantabria, used by fishermen, and smaller and lighter than the Spanish Water Dog.

## Overview

The Cantabrian Water Dog is a Spanish water dog from the coastal areas of Cantabria in northern Spain. Fishermen used it for many tasks around boats and harbours.

It is always white and generally smaller and lighter than the Spanish Water Dog.

## History

This traditional coastal breed may share common origins with the French Barbet. It was officially recognised in Spanish law in 2012 after a request from the government of Cantabria. A census in 2009 counted 1216 dogs.

It is not recognised by the national kennel club but is listed among Spanish breeds in the process of recovery.

## Appearance

Always white, with a build that is lighter and shorter than the Spanish Water Dog. Studies found enough physical and genetic difference to set it apart from neighbouring water dog populations.

## Temperament

Bred for work with fishermen, it is a capable, willing and water-loving dog that enjoys having a job to do.

## Care and exercise

It needs regular exercise and, ideally, access to water. Its water dog coat needs regular grooming to prevent matting.
