A sturdy, calm Spanish pointing dog from Castile, used for hunting hares and birds. Gentle and noble, it does best in the countryside rather than in town.

## Overview

The Burgos Pointer is a robust Spanish gundog from the province of Burgos in Castile. It is used mainly for small game, including hares, rabbits and birds.

It is a gentle, even-tempered dog, good with children, but it needs space and does not suit city life.

## History

The breed dates back to the 16th century and comes from the wide Castilian plateau. It is thought to descend from a mix of the Spanish Hound and the Navarre Pachón, the old Iberian pointing dogs, and it probably helped shape other breeds of its group.

In 2026 it was listed among sixteen Spanish breeds considered vulnerable by the Real Sociedad Canina de España.

## Appearance

A square, powerful dog with a robust look, long ears and a folded double dewlap. The coat is short, dense and smooth. Males stand 62 to 67 cm and females 59 to 64 cm, weighing 25 to 30 kg.

There are two colour variations: liver spotted or mottled, and liver with white patches. The tail is traditionally docked by a third.

## Temperament

The Burgos Pointer is gentle, quiet and rarely startled. Its even temper makes it very good with children, and its reactions are predictable. It is often described as noble. It is intelligent and learns hunting work easily.

## Care and exercise

Like other hunting dogs, it needs daily exercise and plenty of open space to run. It is a countryside dog and does not do well in urban settings. The short coat needs little grooming, and its long ears should be checked regularly.
