An Australian pig-hunting dog developed in Queensland in the 1970s from Bull Terrier, Greyhound and German Shorthaired Pointer, combining speed, scenting power and grip with a loyal, steady nature.

## Overview

The Bull Arab is a large, athletic Australian dog created to find, chase and hold feral pigs over rough country. It remains mainly a working hunting dog, though some live as family companions.

The breed is not recognised by the national kennel council but has its own breed association and written standard. Many dogs called Bull Arabs are only crosses or look-alikes, which has blurred public understanding of the true breed.

## History

Development began in Queensland in 1972 under breeder Mike Hodgens, who combined 50 percent Bull Terrier, 25 percent Greyhound and 25 percent German Shorthaired Pointer. The aim was a dog able to locate, chase and hold feral pigs in tough terrain.

After Hodgens stopped breeding in 1989, hunters in Queensland and New South Wales developed their own lines, sometimes adding Bloodhound for scenting or Mastiff and Great Dane for size. The Australian Bullarab Breeder's Association was formed in 2007 and works toward formal recognition.

## Appearance

A powerful but agile dog with a symmetrical frame and curved outline, built for endurance. Males are ideally 63 to 69 cm and 32 to 42 kg; females 61 to 66 cm and 30 to 40 kg.

The coat is short. Working scars are accepted by the breed standard in the show ring.

## Temperament

The standard asks for a kind, loyal, balanced and placid dog that is intelligent and independent, with strong drive and determination when working. It must not show aggression toward people or other dogs.

Many owners describe them as gentle and sweet at home, but they are strong, driven dogs that need experienced, responsible handling.

## Care and exercise

Needs plenty of vigorous daily exercise and a real job or equivalent activity. Strong fencing, socialisation from puppyhood and consistent training are important for a dog of this power.

The short coat needs only occasional brushing. Desexing non-breeding dogs is encouraged by welfare groups.
