A sturdy, blue-mottled French pointer with a black head from the Cantal mountains, valued as a versatile gundog and a gentle family companion.

## Overview

The Braque d'Auvergne is a strong, versatile pointing dog from the mountainous Cantal area of central France. It is easily recognised by its blue-mottled white coat and solid black head and ears.

It works as a steady, intelligent gundog and also makes a good-natured family companion for active households.

## History

The breed descends from ancient regional hunting dogs of the Auvergne and has been present in Cantal for more than two centuries. It received an FCI breed standard in 1955 and is recognised as a French gundog.

The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom recognised it from April 2016.

## Appearance

This is a strong, substantial dog standing about 53 to 63 cm at the withers. It has a large head, long drooping ears and pendulous lips. The tail was traditionally docked to half its length in some countries.

The coat is short and glossy, white with black ticking that gives a bluish impression, plus large black patches. The head and ears are always black.

## Temperament

Intelligent and good-natured, the Braque d'Auvergne is eager to please and enjoys working alongside its person. It is generally gentle and sociable.

It is happiest with a job to do and company, and can become restless or noisy if left bored.

## Care and exercise

It needs substantial daily exercise, ideally with scenting and field work or long runs off-lead in safe places. Training should be consistent and positive.

The short coat needs only weekly brushing. Check and clean the long ears regularly.

## Health

Generally a healthy breed. As with many large, drop-eared dogs, hip dysplasia and ear infections are worth watching for.
