A rare, sturdy Belgian drover's dog with a rough, wiry coat, bred to herd and guard cattle in the Ardennes and brought back from near extinction in the 1980s.

## Overview

The Bouvier des Ardennes is a medium-sized, robust herding dog from the Belgian Ardennes. Built for strength and function rather than elegance, it has a rough coat, moustache and small beard.

It is a rare breed, once thought to have vanished, and still has a small population.

## History

Herding dogs have worked in the Ardennes since at least the 19th century, chosen for hardiness in harsh weather and rough terrain. They drove cattle, sheep, pigs and horses, and were used by poachers in wartime.

The breed was shaped after 1910 from crosses involving the Bouvier des Flandres, the Belgian Malinois and perhaps the Briard. As farms declined, it nearly died out, and a few dogs found in 1985 were used to rebuild it. The small population has limited genetic diversity.

## Appearance

A short, compact, well-muscled dog with heavier bone than its size suggests and a powerful head. The coat is medium length, coarse and wiry, with eyebrows and a beard.

Males stand roughly 55 to 63 cm and females 51 to 57 cm. Colour is usually brindle or peppered, and the tail may be naturally short or long.

## Temperament

A hardworking, devoted and courageous dog, alert and protective of its family and property. It has the drive and stamina of a true drover.

It needs firm, consistent training and early socialisation to stay well balanced.

## Care and exercise

This active dog needs plenty of exercise and real work, such as herding, or dog sports. It is not suited to idle apartment life.

The wiry coat should be brushed weekly and tidied occasionally.

## Health

Near extinction left the breed with a high level of inbreeding and reduced genetic diversity, so careful breeding choices matter. It is otherwise considered a hardy working dog.
