The Boca-preta Sertanejo is a rustic landrace of Brazil's semi-arid Northeast, a versatile hunting, guarding and cattle dog shaped by drought and four centuries of isolation.

## Overview

The Boca-preta Sertanejo is a traditional dog of the Sertão, the dry interior of north-eastern Brazil. It works alongside the vaqueiros, the region's cowboys, and helps small farmers with hunting and guarding.

It is considered part of the cultural heritage of the region and is moving towards recognition as a breed, with registration by SOBRACI and ALKC.

## History

The dog is believed to descend from indigenous dogs kept by Amerindian peoples, possibly mixed with Portuguese Podengo-type or other European hunting dogs. Early accounts and Dutch-era paintings of Brazil already show dogs of this kind.

It developed largely by natural selection over more than four centuries, surviving drought and scarce food. In 2011 Embrapa Meio-Norte catalogued and measured the dogs, and a preservation project continues.

## Appearance

A lean, rustic dog with a short coat. Colours are varied, including white, bay, brindle, black, red and brown brindle, and the black muzzle gives the dog its name.

## Temperament

Hardy, practical and adaptable, it is a versatile helper that turns its paw to herding, hunting and watching over the farm. It is bonded to the people it works with.

## Care and exercise

A working dog from a hot, dry region, it needs daily activity and a job or outlet for its energy. The short coat needs little grooming.
