An extinct white, shaggy shepherd dog of the Beskydy Mountains that guarded sheep on mountain meadows and resembled a Slovak Cuvac with upright ears.

## Overview

The Beskydský bundáš was the original sheep-guarding dog of the Beskydy Mountains in the Czech lands. It helped shepherds on the high meadows. It is also called the Silesian Shepherd.

The breed vanished in the later twentieth century after attempts to revive it failed.

## History

Local legend says it was a fine shepherd but a poor guard, so the Gorals crossed it with a German Shepherd, giving pure white puppies with the best of both parents. It was still common in the 1950s.

A regeneration of the breed was planned in the 1970s but did not succeed. At that time it lived in the Beskydy, northern Moravia, the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and northern Bohemia. It appears in the writing of Antonín Hrůza.

## Appearance

A medium-sized shepherd dog, about 45 to 55 cm tall, with erect ears. It looked like a Slovak Cuvac but with the height and upright ears of a Bohemian Shepherd. The coat was long, bushy and entirely white, with a very dense undercoat.

## Temperament

As a mountain shepherd's dog it was a capable herder and watchful companion, valued for working closely with people.

## Care and exercise

As a working dog it would have needed active outdoor life and regular brushing of its heavy coat.
