The effect comes from black ticking over a white coat.","sections":{"overview":"The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a low-slung French hound with long, low-set ears and a distinctive blue-ticked coat. It was bred to follow game slowly on foot, and it keeps a determined nose and a cheerful, sociable nature.\n\nIt is still rare outside its homeland but is recognised by the FCI, the Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.","history":"The breed dates back to the Middle Ages and descends directly from the large Grand Bleu de Gascogne. Gaston III of Foix-Béarn, author of a famous medieval hunting treatise, is said to have kept packs of such dogs for boar and wolves.\n\nIn the early nineteenth century falling interest in hunting almost wiped the breed out, but it was rescued and revived by the work of Alain Bourbon.","appearance":"Long in the back and short in the leg, with a smooth coat that is mainly white and ticked to give a bluish look, with brown patches and tan marks above the eyes and on the ears.\n\nIt stands about 34 to 42 cm tall, weighs 16 to 18 kg, and has dark brown eyes and long low-set ears reaching at least the muzzle tip.","personality":"A friendly, easygoing hound that enjoys company, especially other dogs and its family. Like most bassets it is led by its nose and can be stubborn.\n\nIt has a deep, carrying voice and is happiest with an active household and a securely fenced garden.","care":"Offer daily walks on lead or in secure areas, since the nose may carry it far away. Training should be patient, positive and food-friendly.\n\nThe smooth coat needs only weekly brushing. Clean the long ears regularly and watch the weight, as bassets gain easily.","health":"Like other long-backed breeds, it can have back problems, so avoid jumping and keep it lean. The long ears are prone to infection and should be checked often."},"recognition":{"fci_number":35,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/35.html","akc_url":null},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basset_Bleu_de_Gascogne","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q37552","wikipedia_revision":1336174764},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
