It was bred to work on both land and water and to fit in a small boat.\n\nIt is a versatile, devoted companion that can adapt to family life, including apartments, when it gets enough exercise.","history":"The breed developed along the Fox and Wolf Rivers in Wisconsin in the 19th century, from dogs such as the Irish and English Water Spaniels, the Curly Coated Retriever and the Poodle. Dr Fred J. Pfeifer saved it from decline and set up its breed club and standard.\n\nThe UKC recognised it in 1920 and the AKC in 1940. It became Wisconsin's state dog in 1985 and is thought to have helped create the Boykin Spaniel.","appearance":"A medium-sized dog standing about 38 to 46 cm and weighing 11 to 20 kg. The double coat is either tightly curled or wavy, with a coarse, water-shedding outer layer and an insulating undercoat.\n\nThe coat is liver, brown or chocolate, and the skull is broad with long, wide ears.","personality":"The American Water Spaniel enjoys being the centre of attention and often bonds closely with one person. It can be vocal, stubborn and slow to mature.\n\nIt usually gets along well with children, though some may be food possessive. It responds best to varied, consistent training.","care":"It needs regular exercise and mental stimulation, and enjoys swimming, retrieving, agility and flyball. Its oily coat needs regular brushing and has a distinct doggy smell.\n\nIt can live in an apartment if its exercise needs are met.","health":"Genetic variety is fairly good, but eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy occur. Other concerns include hypothyroidism, allergies, epilepsy and hip dysplasia."},"recognition":{"fci_number":301,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/301.html","akc_url":"https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/american-water-spaniel/"},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Water_Spaniel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q37856","wikipedia_revision":1324431388},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
